To those of you who know me well, this story will just remind you of another Nicole airhead moment. This story actually happened a month or more ago, but I find it to be worth writing about.
Shortly after we had moved into the house, on a nice afternoon, I decided that
Tayce and I would go out in the backyard for some afternoon sun and play a little with the dogs. We basked in the sun for about ten minutes then went to head back into the house. Unfortunately, when I went to turn the doorknob, it wouldn't turn. Caleb had locked the doorknob the night before, which was something that I wasn't expecting. When you lock the doorknob, it still turns on the inside, so you never really know it is locked unless you check the outside. Luckily, I had brought my cell phone out with me, so a distressed call went to Caleb at work. The only thing that he could do was leave work early, which I don't think that he was too upset about. So for the next 45 minutes,
Tayce and I sat out on a lawn chair chatting with my mom on the phone.
After having experienced being locked out from the kitchen door, I have been more careful to check the doorknob before I close the door. Unfortunately, I hadn't applied that concept to the front door, but I learned that lesson quickly.
It all happened the week we lost
Kaya. I was being very protective of
Kaboo and not letting him stay in the backyard until we got our fence fixed and a lock on the door. (One of the boards was missing on the top part.) We called the police department to see if there was anything that they could do about the whole situation. Well, I got a phone call from dispatch saying that the officer was at my front door and that I needed to open the door for him. I hurried to the door, with
Tayce in my arms, opened the door, no officer. I walked outside to see if he was next door, and then I heard the
pitter-patter and snorting of
Kaboo. I didn't want him to get out and take off down the street, so I ran to the door and closed it. As soon as it was latched, I discovered my mistake. Not again! Embarrassed, I called Caleb at work and we decided together that we should wait and see if the police officer had any ideas, that is if he ever showed up.
Dispatch called me again a few minutes later, and it was discovered that the officer was down the street. They had given him the wrong address. I waved the officer down. I showed him our fence and explained our situation. He told me that there wasn't anything he could do and that he suspected that it was kids just trying to look at the dogs. I then told him of my
predicament and he tried getting into the garage for me. The officer told me that the only way he could get me into the house was by breaking down the door. I informed him that I didn't need to get into the house that badly and that my husband could come home early from work, but that he just might not be too happy about it. After assuring the officer that he would not be called back to settle a domestic dispute, I settled down on the front porch lawn chairs, broke the news to Caleb, and chatted with my mom on the phone while we waited. Tayce enjoyed watching the cars go by and eventually fell asleep. Kaboo, on the other hand, was at the front window trying desperately to get outside. Forty-five minutes later, my knight in shining armour returned home from a little over half a day of hard work and let me in.All I can say is thank goodness for lawn chairs, cell phones, and a mother is willing to chat!I have now gone a month without being locked outside. We have hidden a key just in case though! Knowing myself, it is likely to happen again.
